Kate Megquier, DVM

PhD Student

Kate Megquier is a veterinarian with a passion for improving our understanding of cancers in companion animals. As a PhD student at Uppsala University and a Visiting Scholar at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, she is studying the genomics of cancers in dogs. Her current work focuses on hemangiosarcoma, a common canine cancer which is also a natural model for the rare human cancer angiosarcoma.

Kate studied veterinary medicine at Tufts University, where she earned a dual DVM and Master’s degree in Comparative Biomedical Sciences. She then spent a year seeing small animal patients in a rotating internship in Denver, Colorado before joining the Vertebrate Genome Biology group at the Broad Institute. She is excited about the prospect of uncovering the genetic mechanisms of cancer in companion animals and using this knowledge to better understand cancers, develop new tests and treatments, and to inform comparative studies of human cancers. Kate hopes that her research will contribute to improving the health and quality of life of pets as well as their people.

Kate is a member of the Veterinary Cancer Society (VCS) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). In her spare time, she has been adopted by a small tortoiseshell cat and helps to care for sick or injured koi fish from her local pond.
